The Together in Barnet story…

Together in Barnet was founded from a passion to eliminate homelessness in Barnet. We have been running a night shelter for people who are sleeping rough since 2003.

The Night Shelter

For many years we were simply know as ‘The Night Shelter’. We officially became a charity in 2014, and Together in Barnet was created - the name reflecting the many wonderful communities and people that make up our charity.

Communities make us who we are!

Operations Manager

“I began volunteering at the shelter back in 2014, became the Shelter Coordinator in 2015 and have now returned as the Operations Manager. I am so passionate about the work we do; providing vital emergency accommodation to people experiencing homelessness in Barnet. We are a real grassroots, inter-faith project and show what the community can do when we come together”

Incredibly, 32 communities of different faiths and denominations across the Borough of Barnet are currently supporting Together in Barnet in different ways. These communities are the cornerstone of everything that we are able to provide: hosting the night shelter, providing home cooked meals and a safe place to stay to those experiencing homelessness in Barnet.

Together in Barnet is made up of over 300 volunteers, 32 interfaith communities, 7 trustees and 2 members of staff. We really are a grassroots community-based charity.

Not just a bed and breakfast….

We work very closely with our partner charity, Homeless Action in Barnet, to provide a tailored package of support for each guest who is in our emergency accommodation. Our partners at HAB work with the clients to source long term housing solutions as well as providing other practical types of support.

COVID-19

COVID-19 affected the core functioning of our charity forcing the night shelter to close in March 2020. Fortunately, we were able to reopen, providing guests with individual COVID-safe rooms at a hotel. Our first hotel project ran from January 2021 – June 2021. We opened our second hotel project in October 2021, running until March 2022. Over the course of this time, we have been able to support over 40 people with COVID-safe emergency accommodation.

care packages…

During the pandemic lockdowns, we were also able to provide regular care packages for over 180 people who were vulnerably housed across 7 London boroughs.

“What’s in store for the future?”

We have some exciting things planned for the near future!

We are launching the Together Project - an initiative bringing together members of the community with people who have experienced homelessness or are currently experiencing homelessness. The aim of this project is to provide individual tailored support with the aim of creating networks, community, and social contact. This can include but is not limited to: a mentor, support or simply a friendly face, in order to reduce loneliness and support people to achieve their goals.

If you are interested in supporting the Together Project, or would simply like to know more, please email marcin@togetherinbarnet.org to get involved.

At the heart of what we do…

Our guests - people experiencing homelessness. We provide people with vital emergency accommodation with the aim that no-one should spend one night on the streets of the borough of Barnet.
